Welcome to Microbiology and Immunology
Our Mission is:
- To train graduate students in how to perform independent research, to interpret and communicate scientific findings, and to prepare grant proposals and scientific manuscripts.
- To educate future physicians in the disciplines of Microbiology and Immunology so that they can be prepared to provide excellent care to patients.
- To discover and publicize new knowledge in the fields of Microbiology and Immunology.
- To provide service to our institution, profession, and community.
Our faculty members maintain NIH-funded research programs directed at understanding important issues related to viruses, bacteria, and the immune system. We are experiencing an unprecedented expansion, including the addition of new faculty members, the doubling of our postdoctoral program, the award of more than $22.9 million by an NIH grant to establish and maintain the Center for Molecular and Tumor Virology, and the growth of our nationally recognized training program for graduate students.

The Department frequently has open positions for research associates and technical staff to assist in ongoing research in a variety of ongoing projects in molecular biology, virology, bacteriology, immunology, pathogenesis, and related areas. LATEST NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Congratulations to Rona Scott, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Mingyu Ding Memorial Professor, received a Chancellor’s Pathways Research Award.
Two members of the Center for Applied Immunology and Pathological Processes COBRE at LSU Health Shreveport won meritorious awards for their presentations at the conference.
Each year at our commencement, the Allen A. Copping Excellence in Teaching Awards are given to selected individuals nominated by students and peers. This year's recipients are Michael Yim, MD; Kristin Butller, MPH, MLS; and David McGee, PhD.
The April 2024 School of Graduate Studies Student of the Month is Temitayo Bamgbose in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
