KTAL 6 - Southwood High School seniors get the opportunity to explore the medical field away from the classroom and in a lab with a mentor through the BioStart program at LSUHS.
The Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Neuroscience has coordinated the BioStart Program successfully since 2009, introducing high school seniors from Southwood’s Biotechnology Academy to hands-on, intensive laboratory research. Students conduct research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor involved in translational and clinical research at LSU Health Shreveport.
The primary purpose of the BioStart program is to increase the quality and quantity of area graduates in the medical, biotechnology and life sciences fields with the expectation that many of these students will continue on to earn advanced degrees and participate in the regional workforce as medical professionals, research scientists, teachers and technicians. For more information, please visit Southwood's website.
Funding for the BioStart Program is provided by the BRF, LSU Health Shreveport Foundation and other generous partners.
